Why visit Ascona
Ascona is a small lakeside town of around 5,500 people on the northwestern shore of Lake Maggiore — four kilometres from Locarno and a world apart in atmosphere. Where Locarno is a city, Ascona is a village whose entire character is built around its lakeside promenade: a broad, flat piazza lined with pastel-coloured houses, café tables, and low palms that runs along the water’s edge in a curve of considerable beauty.
The town has been drawing artists, writers, and utopian thinkers since the beginning of the twentieth century. Monte Verità — the “Mountain of Truth” — rises behind the town and was the site of a famous anarchist commune from 1900 onward, attracting figures including the dancer Isadora Duncan, the psychiatrist Otto Gross, the writers Erich Maria Remarque and Stefan George, and the psychologist Carl Jung. The commune pioneered vegetarianism, nudism, Eastern philosophy, and alternative medicine decades before these ideas became mainstream in Western culture. The Monte Verità estate is now a conference centre and museum, and the history of what happened on its hillside is one of the more interesting cultural stories in Switzerland.
Beyond the history, Ascona rewards those who want to do very little very pleasantly. The promenade is made for sitting at outdoor tables in the evening with a glass of Ticino Merlot, watching the boats cross the lake and the light change on the mountains across the water. There are worse ways to spend an afternoon in Switzerland.
Getting to Ascona
By bus from Locarno
The most convenient approach from Locarno is by city bus (lines 31 and 34), which depart from the Locarno bus station near the railway station and reach Ascona in around 20 minutes. Services run frequently throughout the day and are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.
By lake boat
Lake boats operated by Navigazione Lago Maggiore connect Locarno, Ascona, and the Brissago Islands throughout the season (April to October). The boat journey from Locarno to Ascona takes around 30 minutes — longer than the bus but significantly more pleasant, arriving directly at the lakeside piazza. Swiss Travel Pass holders travel free on the Swiss lake services.
By car
Ascona is accessible by road from Locarno in around 10 minutes via the lakeside road. Parking is available at the edge of the old town (the centre itself is largely pedestrianised). From Bellinzona, the drive takes around 25 minutes.
Top things to do in Ascona
Walk the lakeside promenade
The Piazza Giuseppe Motta — the long, flat piazza running along the lake’s edge — is Ascona’s main attraction and its primary public space. In the morning, delivery trucks occupy one end while café owners set out chairs on the other; by mid-morning, the tables are full with visitors eating breakfast or drinking the first coffee of the day; by evening, the promenade is the social centre of the town.
The view from the promenade is constantly attractive — across the lake to the mountains of the opposite shore, south toward the open water, and back up to the Monte Verità hill above the town. The pastel facades of the old houses that line the landward side of the piazza have been frequently painted, drawn, and photographed since the nineteenth century. Walking the full length of the promenade takes around 20 minutes; most visitors take two hours.
Explore Monte Verità
The Monte Verità estate, five minutes’ walk uphill from the town centre, is now managed as a conference and cultural centre by the Canton of Ticino. The original wooden communal buildings from the early twentieth century survive and are open for visits; a museum in the Casa Anatta (the main commune building) covers the history of the movement with photographs, documents, and personal objects from the commune’s residents.
The terraced gardens around the buildings, planted with subtropical species that thrive in the Lake Maggiore microclimate, are pleasant to walk through. The view from the Monte Verità terrace over Ascona and the lake is one of the better elevated perspectives on the town.
The estate hosts an annual festival (the Monte Verità Forum) and various cultural events through the year. Check the programme when planning a visit.
Visit the old town churches
The old town of Ascona, inland from the promenade, is a small warren of narrow streets and small squares. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Misericordia, a fifteenth-century church containing an exceptional cycle of late medieval frescoes, is the main artistic attraction. The fresco cycle covers the interior walls with scenes from the life of the Virgin and the Passion narrative in a style typical of the North Italian late Gothic period. The quality and preservation of the frescoes is remarkable given the age of the building.
The church of San Pietro e Paolo, on the promenade itself, has a more conventional baroque interior but a pleasant position directly overlooking the lake.
Boat trip to the Brissago Islands
The Brissago Islands (Isole di Brissago) — two small islands in Lake Maggiore with one of Switzerland’s finest botanical gardens — are reachable directly from the Ascona boat pier, or you can combine the island visit with a scenic cruise on Lake Lugano to Morcote if extending your Ticino itinerary. Lake boats make the journey in around 15 minutes. The larger island’s botanical garden grows over 1,700 subtropical and tropical species, including palms, banana trees, succulents, and exotic flowering plants, in a climate that allows year-round growth. The garden is one of Switzerland’s more unusual natural attractions, and the combination of the island setting, the botanical richness, and the lake views makes it an excellent half-day excursion. Swiss Travel Pass holders travel free on the boat; a separate garden entrance fee applies.
Art galleries
Ascona has maintained an art gallery scene since the early twentieth century, when the Monte Verità community attracted avant-garde artists from across Europe. The Museo Comunale d’Arte Moderna, housed in a historic building at the edge of the old town, holds an important collection of Swiss and Italian twentieth-century art with particular strength in Ticino-based painters. Several private galleries on and near the promenade show contemporary Swiss and Italian art.
Water sports
Lake Maggiore off Ascona is suitable for swimming from late May through September. The water temperature reaches 24 to 26 degrees Celsius in July and August — warm by Swiss standards. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and boat rentals are available from operators on the lakefront. The sheltered bay between Ascona and Locarno is particularly suitable for paddling beginners.
Where to stay in Ascona
Ascona has a range of accommodation anchored by two historic grand hotels: the Hotel Eden Roc and the Hotel Castello del Sole. Both are five-star properties with extensive lake frontages, spa facilities, and a clientele that includes the European celebrity circuit — Ascona has long been a discreet destination for prominent European figures. Mid-range options include the Hotel Ascona and the Hotel Castello Seeschloss, a medieval tower converted into a small design hotel on the promenade. Budget accommodation is limited in Ascona itself; Locarno offers more affordable options with frequent bus connections.
The town fills in late July and August, when prices peak and promenade tables require reservations. The shoulder seasons of May/June and September/October offer the same Mediterranean character at significantly lower prices and with fewer crowds.
Where to eat and drink
Ascona’s restaurant scene is excellent given the town’s small size. The Osteria del Teatro is a reliable address for traditional Ticino cooking — risotto, polenta with braised meat, lake fish. La Brezza on the promenade is good for lighter meals and aperitivo. The restaurant at the Hotel Eden Roc is the best formal dining in the area — expensive, excellent, and very well regarded.
The aperitivo culture is well established in Ascona. Between 18:00 and 20:00, the promenade bars serve Aperol Spritz, local Merlot, and small plates of olives, salumi, and bread. It is one of the more pleasant ways to spend an early evening in Switzerland.
Practical tips for visiting Ascona
Ascona’s pedestrianised centre is very compact — the entire old town and promenade can be covered on foot in a single morning. The key decisions are whether to include Monte Verità (an additional 30 minutes) and whether to make the boat trip to the Brissago Islands (half-day).
The Swiss Travel Pass covers the bus from Locarno and the lake boats to the islands. It does not reduce hotel prices, which are among the highest in Ticino.
For a combined Ticino visit, Ascona works best as an add-on to a Locarno base — close enough for a half-day visit, distinctive enough to justify the detour. The combination of Bellinzona (UNESCO castles, Saturday market), Locarno (Film Festival atmosphere, Cardada viewpoint), and Ascona (lake promenade, Monte Verità, Brissago Islands) covers Ticino’s major themes in three complementary stops.
For those with limited time, a half-day from Locarno — boat to Ascona, walk the promenade, lunch at an osteria, and boat back via the Brissago Islands — is one of the most enjoyable short excursions available from any Ticino base.
