Switzerland honeymoon itinerary: 10 days of romance

Switzerland honeymoon itinerary: 10 days of romance

Switzerland honeymoon itinerary: 10 days of pure romance

Switzerland has been synonymous with romance for generations — and not without reason. Few places on earth combine the intimacy of small alpine villages with the grandeur of glacier-covered peaks, the elegance of lakeside belle époque hotels, and the extraordinary comfort of panoramic trains that seem to float through mountain scenery. This 10-day honeymoon itinerary chooses slow travel, exceptional accommodation, private moments, and experiences designed for two people who want to begin their marriage somewhere genuinely extraordinary.

The route moves from Zurich through Lucerne to Grindelwald and Zermatt, then west to Montreux and Geneva. The Swiss Travel Pass covers all transport. The key difference from a standard itinerary is the pace: two nights in each major stop, luxury accommodation wherever possible, and evenings prioritised for private dinners and sunset views rather than sightseeing.

Day 1: Zurich — arrival in style

Land at Zurich Airport. If budget allows, book a room in the Hotel Baur au Lac on the lake edge (Zurich’s finest hotel and one of the great European properties) or the Widder Hotel in the Lindenhügel old town (a collection of nine medieval houses converted into a boutique luxury property with extraordinary art). Both are within easy reach of the Hauptbahnhof.

Spend the afternoon walking Zurich hand in hand: the Fraumünster for Chagall’s windows in the afternoon light, the Lindenhügel for the city panorama, and Bahnhofstrasse for window shopping. Reserve dinner at one of the rooftop restaurants above the lake — in summer the long Swiss evenings and the mountains on the horizon make for an unforgettable first night.

Accommodation: 1 night Zurich — luxury hotel.

Day 2: Lucerne — the most romantic city in Switzerland

The 45-minute train to Lucerne is a gentle introduction to the Swiss landscape. Lucerne earns its reputation as the most romantic city in Switzerland: the Chapel Bridge at dusk, the lake reflecting the Pilatus and Rigi, the old town lanes narrowing between painted facades. Book a room in the Hotel Schweizerhof or Palace Hotel, both on the lake edge with mountain views from the upper floors.

Morning: Chapel Bridge, the Musegg Wall. Afternoon: the historic paddle steamer on the lake — the William Tell and the Uri are working steam vessels dating from the 1890s, and a private table on the upper deck as the boat turns toward the southern end of the lake and the Alps fill the view is as romantic as Switzerland gets. Book in advance; the Swiss Travel Pass covers the fare.

Evening: dinner at one of the lake-view restaurants. Lucerne has excellent upscale dining — the Jasper restaurant in the Hotel Palace has a Michelin star.

Accommodation: 2 nights Lucerne.

Day 3: Mount Pilatus — above the clouds

A clear morning on Mount Pilatus is one of those experiences that makes a honeymoon feel genuinely different from an ordinary holiday. The Pilatus Golden Round Trip takes the boat to Alpnachstad, the rack railway to the summit, and the cable car back — with breakfast at the summit restaurant above the clouds, watching the Central Swiss plateau stretch to the horizon below you.

The Pilatus Kulm summit has a historic hotel (opened 1890) — if budget allows, booking a single night here, above the clouds with mountain views from the window, is one of the great Swiss hotel experiences. But it requires very advance planning.

Alternatively, return to Lucerne for the afternoon and take the train to Grindelwald in the evening (about 2 hours via Interlaken).

Days 4-5: Grindelwald — the Eiger and luxury alpine

Grindelwald at the foot of the Eiger north face is one of the most dramatically sited villages in the Alps. For a honeymoon, book the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof or one of the boutique chalets with Eiger views — waking to the north face of the Eiger filling your window is quite unlike anything else.

Day 4 — Grindelwald First and the Cliff Walk

The Grindelwald First gondola (6 minutes from the village) reaches the First plateau at 2,168 metres. The Cliff Walk — a series of suspended walkways and viewing platforms bolted to the cliff face — gives extraordinary views of the Eiger and the valley below. Walk to Bachalpsee lake (1 hour from First) — on a still morning the double lake perfectly reflects the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn, a view that rewards any photographer.

For something more indulgent, book a private guided snowshoeing tour (in winter) or a sunrise mountain hike through a local guide company. Many Grindelwald guides specialise in private excursions for couples.

Day 5 — Jungfraujoch for two

Take the Jungfraujoch train from Grindelwald Grund. At 3,454 metres on the Jungfraujoch, the world feels very far away — just the two of you, the Aletsch Glacier spreading to the horizon, and the absolute silence of high altitude. The Ice Palace inside the glacier has ice sculptures and a long tunnel of blue-green ice walls. In summer you can walk outside on the glacier snow in the sunshine.

Book the first morning train and arrive before 10am for the best light and fewest other visitors.

Accommodation: 2 nights Grindelwald.

Days 6-7: Zermatt — the Matterhorn and mountain luxury

Train from Interlaken to Zermatt via Visp (2h 15min). Zermatt is the most romantic mountain resort in Switzerland. The car-free village, the Matterhorn visible at every turn, the wood-panel restaurants serving raclette by candlelight — it is designed, it seems, for couples.

For accommodation, the Mont Cervin Palace or the Riffelhaus (on the Gornergrat railway, 2,582 metres elevation, with Matterhorn directly across the valley) are the most romantic options. The Riffelhaus requires the Gornergrat train to reach it — Swiss Travel Pass gives 50% off — and waking to the Matterhorn outside your window while completely alone on the mountain is extraordinary.

Day 6 — Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 metres on a clear day is one of the finest views in the Alps. Four countries, 29 four-thousand-metre peaks, and the Matterhorn summit directly overhead. The Glacier Palace ice cave is cold and extraordinary.

Evening: raclette dinner in Zermatt. Many restaurants have a table by the window with a direct Matterhorn view — book specifically for this.

Day 7 — Riffelsee and Stellisee walks

A gentle day for the honeymoon. Take the Sunnegga funicular and walk to Stellisee lake (30 minutes) — the still water perfectly reflects the Matterhorn in calm morning conditions. Walk on to Grindjisee and Grünsee for quieter reflections. Pack a picnic from one of the village delis and find a spot on the grass with a perfect view.

Alternatively, book a private helicopter flight over the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa — helicopter companies in Zermatt offer 20-30 minute alpine flights that circle the summit at 4,478 metres. It is a splurge, but for a honeymoon, it may be the memory you return to most often.

Accommodation: 2 nights Zermatt.

Days 8-9: Montreux — the Riviera suisse

Train from Zermatt to Montreux via Visp and Lausanne (about 2h 45min). Montreux on the north shore of Lac Léman is the Swiss Riviera — palm trees, a 5-kilometre lakefront promenade, the Lavaux UNESCO vineyards climbing the hillsides above, and the most elegant belle époque hotels in Switzerland.

Book the Montreux Palace or the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace — these grand hotels have been receiving honeymooners since the 1890s and know exactly what they are doing. Suites with lake views and balconies overlooking the water are worth the upgrade.

Day 8 — Chillon Castle and the Lavaux

Visit the Château de Chillon in the morning — walk the 3 kilometres from Montreux along the lake path, arriving before the tour groups. The castle’s great halls, its dungeons where Byron’s prisoner spent four years, and its towers overlooking the Alps of Savoy are beautiful and moving.

Afternoon: a boat trip to one of the Lavaux villages — Rivaz, Cully, or Saint-Saphorin — for wine tasting in a cellar above the lake. The Chasselas whites of Lavaux are among Switzerland’s finest wines and largely unknown outside the country. The wine growers welcome visitors by appointment.

Day 9 — GoldenPass day or spa

Option 1: Take the GoldenPass Panoramic train from Montreux toward Zweisimmen for a half-day scenic rail excursion through the Pays-d’Enhaut highland, returning in time for dinner.

Option 2: Spa day at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace or the Victoria hotel spa. Switzerland’s spa culture is excellent and a day of treatment and thermal pools between mountain adventures is a perfect honeymoon day.

Evening: final dinner on the lakefront terrace with the Dents du Midi mountains lit by the last sun.

Accommodation: 2 nights Montreux.

Day 10: Geneva — final day

Train to Geneva (45 minutes). A final morning in one of Europe’s most elegant cities: the old town, the Jet d’Eau, the Patek Philippe Museum (the world’s finest horological collection), and a last coffee on the Place du Bourg-de-Four, Geneva’s oldest square.

Lunch by the lake at one of the terrace restaurants on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, with the Jura mountains visible in one direction and the Mont Blanc massif in the other. Then direct train to Geneva Airport (15 minutes).

The best romantic experiences in Switzerland

Sunrise on the Matterhorn from Riffelberg

One of the most breathtaking experiences available in Switzerland is watching the first light of day hit the Matterhorn’s north face from the alp plateau at Riffelberg (2,582 metres). The mountain turns from black to deep red to gold in the minutes before full sunrise, the Riffelberg hotel and its terrace perfectly positioned for the view. To do this, you need to stay overnight at the Riffelhaus hotel (reached by the Gornergrat railway, which gives 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass). Book well in advance. The walk from the hotel to the Riffelsee lake in the first morning light — when the Matterhorn reflects perfectly in the still water — is a genuinely private and extraordinary moment.

A private boat on Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) is the most dramatic Swiss lake, enclosed by mountains on all sides and dotted with medieval chapels and castle ruins. The historic paddle steamers are wonderful, but for a honeymoon consider booking a private motor boat rental from Lucerne or Weggis — several operators offer two-hour private lake excursions with a captain, allowing you to find quiet coves and swim from the boat. Prices range from CHF 200-400 for a two-hour private excursion.

Dinner at altitude

Switzerland has a tradition of mountain restaurants that goes back to the 19th century, and some of the finest dining in the country happens at altitude. The restaurant at Kleine Scheidegg (2,061 metres, Eiger north face backdrop), the Chez Vrony in Findeln above Zermatt (3 Michelin-recommended, reached on foot or by ski lift, open in summer), and the Restaurant Pirmin Zurbriggen at the Riffelalp Resort (2,222 metres above Zermatt) all offer genuinely excellent food in settings that no lowland restaurant can match. Book well in advance.

The Glacier Express for two

Riding the Glacier Express from Zermatt in first class is a uniquely romantic experience — eight hours crossing the roof of Europe, lunch served at your seat, panoramic windows curving up into the roof, and the Oberalp Pass and Rhine Gorge unfolding outside. First class seats are arranged in pairs facing each other across a small table, making conversation and wine-drinking natural throughout. The train does not need to be added to this 10-day itinerary (it takes a full extra day), but it is worth extending the honeymoon by one or two days to include it.

Practical information

Accommodation philosophy

For a honeymoon, prioritise location over size. A small room with a genuine Matterhorn or lake view is worth more than a large room facing a carpark. Always specify “honeymoon” when booking — Swiss hotels are discreet and professional and will make small gestures: room upgrades, welcome champagne, flowers. The most romantic Swiss hotels are not always the largest — the Romantik Hotel Stern in Chur, the Hotel Splendide Royal in Lugano, and the Chetzeron above Crans-Montana are boutique properties that specialise in exactly this kind of experience.

Best time for a Swiss honeymoon

June and September are the optimal months — warm days, stable weather, lower crowds than July/August, and the landscape at its most vivid. Late May has spectacular wildflowers in the alpine meadows but can have lingering snow above 2,000 metres. October has the best autumn light and very manageable crowds but some mountain railways begin winter maintenance schedules.

December through February suits couples who want a snow-covered Switzerland — Zermatt at Christmas is particularly magical, with the Matterhorn rising above a snow-blanketed village and horse-drawn sleigh rides available by evening. The winter itinerary covers the cold-season version in detail.

Transport

The Swiss Travel Pass (10 consecutive days) at CHF 445 per adult covers all trains, lake boats, and urban transport. The pass gives 25-50% off mountain railways. For a honeymoon, private taxi transfers between some destinations (for example, Zermatt to the Riffelhaus, or Montreux to a specific vineyard for a private tasting) are worth considering as supplements.

Budget estimate (per couple, 10 days, luxury)

  • Swiss Travel Passes (2 x CHF 445): CHF 890
  • Mountain excursions for two: CHF 600-800
  • Accommodation (10 nights, luxury): CHF 4,000-8,000
  • Food and dining (CHF 150/day for two): CHF 1,500

Total for two (excluding flights): CHF 7,000-11,200

For a more moderate budget, the 10-day classic itinerary covers similar destinations at half the accommodation cost. For more detail on each destination’s romantic potential, see Zermatt, Montreux, and Grindelwald.
